The Sports Physical Is A Form That Gates The Season
Athletic participation clearance is a paperwork requirement enforced by schools and athletic associations, and its timing catches families out far more often than its content does.

A teenager cannot practice with a school team until a completed clearance form is on file. The requirement is administrative in its effect and medical in its purpose, and the two get confused.
The form is required by the association, not the doctor
State high school athletic associations and school districts set the requirement, specify the form and decide how long a clearance remains valid.
That is why the document is standardized across schools in a state and why an examination done for another purpose does not automatically satisfy it.
The clinician completes it; the rule that it exists comes from elsewhere, which explains why families sometimes cannot get an answer from either party.
Validity periods are why timing goes wrong
Clearances expire on a defined schedule rather than lasting indefinitely, and the clock usually starts from the examination date.
A physical done in the spring can therefore expire mid-season the following year, which is discovered when a student is held out of practice.
Scheduling the appointment in a consistent window each year, rather than when the season is announced, avoids the annual scramble for an opening.
The history section carries most of the value
Much of the form is a written history covering family cardiac history, prior injuries, breathing difficulty during exertion and previous head injuries.
That section is completed by the family, and the clinician's examination is guided by what it contains, so an incomplete history reduces the value of the visit.
Answering it carefully is the part parents control, and it is the part most likely to be filled in hurriedly in a waiting room.
Clearance is not a guarantee of anything
A completed form indicates that nothing was identified that would preclude participation at the time of the examination. It does not predict what will happen during a season.
Conditions can develop after clearance, and any new symptom during training is a reason to be seen again rather than to rely on a form already on file.
Concussion protocols in particular are separate processes with their own return-to-play requirements, handled by the school and by a treating clinician.
Mass screening events trade depth for access
Some schools and clinics run group physical events, which are inexpensive, fast and genuinely useful for families without an established practice.
They are also brief and are not looking at a child's full medical record, which a regular clinician has in front of them.
Where a family has an ongoing relationship with a pediatric practice, folding the clearance into a routine visit generally produces a more informed examination.
Questions readers ask
What is a reasonable time?
It depends on age, the event, the journey and local norms, which vary enormously. The route home is a better thing to negotiate over than the hour.
They broke the curfew. Now what?
A proportionate, short and stated consequence, applied calmly, keeps future disclosure alive. A large unpredictable one mostly teaches better concealment.
